Zonal programme coordinator of ATASP-1, a programme developed by the African Development Bank {ATASP-1] in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Egba Romanus, made the disclosure during the 2017 steering meeting of agricultural transformation agenda support program, Phase one held at ENADEP, Enugu.
He further disclosed that other youths from the two states were also trained on cassava production technology, adding that presently, they were in the process of identifying fabricators.
He explained that they did thorough sensitization in the communities involved in the program adding that traditional rulers, presidents of town unions and other stakeholders were carried along.
He added that 33 of the youths were selected from the 33 communities involved in the programme He also disclosed that they awarded contracts for four health centers, eight boreholes and eight classroom blocks in Enugu and Anambra states
The Enugu state commissioner for agriculture, Engr. Micheal Ene, in his speech, advocated massive production of foods locally to discourage importation.
The commissioner said Nigeria has fertile land to produce large quantity of food that would sustain the country, pointing out that agriculture was the only solution to recession.
The meeting, he disclosed, was organized to examine the report and documents concerning the programme to allow them brief the respective governors of the two state.
“We can produce large quantity of food needed for the country because we have fertile land” He stated
In his contribution, the Permanent Secretary, Enugu State, Ministry of Agriculture and Chairman Agricultural transformation
implementation committee, Hon. Ogbonna Idike, pointed out that rice and cassava
production programme in the two states is one of the means of creating jobs.
He urged all the stakeholders to sacrifice themselves and partner with the farmers to make sure that the programme achieves its purpose.
