Anambra to export 1millon tubers of yam to UK

Anambra State government has announced plans to export one million tubers of yam to the United Kingdom.


Governor Willie Obiano, who made the disclosure in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state, also said the state would soon produce 550,000, eggs per day to meet the needs of the people.

Senator distributes 114 water pumps to dry-season farmers‎ in Bauchi

The senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial district, Senator Ali Wakili has distributed 114 water pumps to dry season farmers in his constituency.

Speaking during the distribution at his residence in Bauchi, he said that the gesture is aimed at assisting rural farmers as a way to reduce poverty at the grassroots.

Accomack County leads Virginia in corn and soybean production

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced that Accomack County leads Virginia in corn and soybean production.


The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released corn and soybean county estimates from the 2016. Corn and soybeans, which are Virginia’s top cash crops, brought in nearly $361 million in cash in 2015.

How safe is the wax on apples?

Fruit waxing is the process of covering fruits (and in some cases vegetables) with artificial waxing material. Waxing materials may be either natural or petroleum-based.

The primary reasons for waxing are to prevent water loss (making up for the removal in washing of the natural waxes in fruits that have them, particularly citrus but also, for example, apples) and thus retard shrinkage and spoilage, and to improve appearance.

 
Coating of apples is carried out by applying a thin layer of wax on the surface. The coating process can be carried out by either dipping, brushing or spraying with wax.

Nigeria to export dry yams to China – Chief Audu Ogbeh

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, said that Nigeria would soon begin exporting dry yam to China. He spoke while inaugurating the committee on Nigerian yam export programme in Abuja.


“The Chinese were here a few days ago and were asking for dry yam. I wondered why they wanted it dried.

CIFA opposes sugar import into India

Consortium of Indian Farmers Associations (CIFA), an Indian farmers' body, has alleged that some sugar has already been brought into the country, even as government is still trying to assess the production in the country and need for any imports.

A release from CIFA stated: "As per market reports, some sugar has already been brought into the country by speculators, who are now putting pressure on the Government to reduce import duty so that they can immediately offload their sugar in the country." 

Mobile App launched by company for farmers to hire farm machinery

EM3 AgriServices launches a mobile app through which farmers in Madhya Pradesh can place orders for renting farm equipment and services, with a built in option of paying online via the payment wallet.

The company also plans to increase its Samadhan Kendras which provide agricultural farm equipment and services such as tractors, soil analysis, seedbed preparation, sowing, fertilizer application, weed/pest control, harvesting and post-harvest operations.

AFDB to invest $24 billion in 10 years to help drive the agricultural transformation of Africa

The president of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Dr Akinwumi Adesina has said the bank through its Feed Africa Strategy, would invest $24 billion over the next 10 years to help drive the agricultural transformation of Africa. This he said is a 400 per cent increase in financing to the agricultural sector by the bank. 


According to him, “The bank’s calculation is that transforming African agriculture will cost approximately $315 billion over 10 years, but will create new markets worth roughly $85 billion per year in incremental revenue by 2025.”

FG To Open Grain Reserves Soon – Ogbeh

The minister of agriculture and rural development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has disclosed that the federal government was considering opening the country’s grain reserves in the next two weeks as part of measures aimed at cushioning high prices.


The Minister who stated this in a chat with journalists in Abuja admitted that prices of grains like sorghum, maize and millet were beginning to drop.  According to him, “maize has dropped from N180,000 per ton to N140,000 and in Kaduna farmers are willing to sell at N135,000.”

Kebbi State procures 100 Tractors, 300, 000 tons of Fertilizer to boost Agriculture


The Kebbi State Government has procured 300,000 tons of fertilizer for farmers under its short and long term plans, in an effort to increase food production.

The State Commissioner of Agriculture, Alhaji Muhammad Garba disclosed this to newsmen during a ministerial briefing organised by the state chapter of NUJ in Binin Kebbi.

From 5 to 11 States into Wheat Production - Gov Atiku Bagugu

The Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, on Monday met with the Presidential Task Force on Rice and Wheat‎ Production, to review factors mitigating against self-sufficiency.


Recall that they were inaugurated last year June by the federal government to make Nigeria self sufficient in rice and wheat and step up current efforts to produce those commodities in the country.

Nigeria produced 370,000 metric tonnes of catfish in 2016 - CAFAN President

During the Annual General Meeting of Catfish Association of Nigeria (CAFAN) on Tuesday, in Benin, Chief Tayo Akingbolagun, the National President said Nigeria produced 370,000 metric tonnes of catfish in 2016.
 


He said that the value of the 370,000 metric tonnes of fish is over N175 billion, adding that fish business contributed about 4.5 per cent to the nation’s GDP and also provided over two million jobs to Nigerians, cutting across the various sectors of the economy.

“Following decreasing revenue from the oil and gas, the focus of our government is to reposition Nigeria’s revenue platforms through investment in agriculture.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development – Chief Audu Ogbeh has inaugurated the Committees for the implementation of the MoU between the Federal Government of Nigeria; participating State Governments of Nigeria and the China-Africa Machinery Corporation – CAMACO on Agricultural Mechanization System in Abuja.


CAMACO is a venture funded by the China African Development Fund – CADFund as a strategic partnership built and developed between China and Africa, with the purpose of encouraging and supporting Chinese enterprises to invest in Africa.

Ghana making headway in incorporating youths in agriculture


The Ghanaian government are making headway in incorporating youths in agriculture from public universities to enhance agricultural production in the country.

Senior Minister, Osafo Marfo, at a breakfast meeting themed: “A public – private dialogue on stability, growth and jobs”, revealed that the government in coalition with the universities would recruit unemployed agricultural graduates as extension service providers across the country.

“As part of enhancing agriculture production in the country, we have decided in consultation with the universities, all those who have done degrees in Agriculture and are unemployed. We will be calling all of them for short term training in extension services so that with their degree background, they will be in a position to give extension services across the country”, he said.

In 12 months Nigeria imports 189.5 metric tonnes of tomato paste

The expert, Mr Duro Kuteyi, food manufacturer at Betamark Consulting, disclosed on Friday in Lagos that Nigeria imports not less than 189.5 metric tons of tomato paste and sauce in the last 12 months while reacting to issues of post-harvest waste of fresh tomatoes in major farms across the country.

Kuteyi said: “in spite of being identified as the 14th largest producer of tomatoes, it is sad to note that Nigeria imports various processed tomato products for the consumption of its nationals.

“The imported tomato products include, canned tomato paste, tomato ketchup and various sauces, canned tomato fruit, etc.
“Between 2015 and 2016, a total of 189,510.11 metric tons of tomato paste was imported into Nigeria.
“This is equivalent to 1,042,305.68 metric tons of fresh tomatoes.

“A lot of the tomatoes grown in Nigeria suffer post-harvest losses incurred from transporting harvest from the farms in the northern part of the country where they are grown, to the southern markets where they are consumed.

$2.83bn injected into manufacturing, agriculture by CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says it distributed 2.83 billion dollars to critical sectors of the economy between December 2016 and January 2017.

On Thursday, Mr Isaac Okorafor, the Acting Director, Corporate Communications Department of CBN, made this known in a statement in Abuja. He said that manufacturing, raw materials and agriculture outdid the disbursements targeted at the employment and wealth generating sectors of the economy.

The Former Prime Minister of Togo, Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo who has more than 30 years of experience in political affairs, international development, diplomacy and financial management has been appointed as the sixth president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). IFAD is a specialized United Nations agency and international financial institution that invests in eradicating rural poverty in developing countries around the world.


The former Prime Minister in his words said, “I have come from the rural world and I have first-hand knowledge of the harshness of this kind of life. We have to keep our ambition and at the same time be realistic and pragmatic. We have to demonstrate that every dollar invested will have the highest value for money”.

Feed Nigeria Summit 2017

How to Start Tomato Farming

Mexican Senator Proposes Halting U.S. Corn Imports

Soybeans and grains were lower overnight on signs of promising weather in competing exporting country and amid threats from a Mexican lawmaker who proposed a ban on United States corn imports.

Rains in parts of Argentina will likely boost crop production in the country, forecasters have said. According to Commodity Weather Group, rain is anticipated to ease dry conditions in southern Brazil.


In Sokoto, Dangote to launch 25,000ha rice project

Dangote Rice, a subsidiary of Dangote Group is set to take-off on Wednesday 25,000 hectares of rice outgrower programme in Sokoto, Nigeria.

The Sokoto state governor Aminu Tambuwal is expected to flag off the project, and seedlings will be distributed to local farmers who will in turn plant and sell rice to Dangote for milling and final processing.
